Environmental technologies: POWERSTEP takes part in IFAT 2016

Wastewater treatment plants are part of the European energy transition, as POWERSTEP advertised during its participation in one of the world’s biggest environmental technologies trade fair – IFAT 2016.

From 30th May to 3rd June 2016, the POWERSTEP partners – Veolia Germany, Veolia Water Technologies, Kompetezzentrum Wasser Berlin, Arctik and Berlin Wasser Betriebe – participated in IFAT. Their goal was to communicate the project objectives whilst introducing to operators and utilities the technologies at stake in the different full scale demonstration case studies.

Organic matter in municipal wastewater has an untapped energy potential of 87,500 GWh, the equivalent of 12 power plants of 1,000 Megawatt! Energy-neutral or even energy-positive wastewater treatment plants can be achieved by converting this chemical energy into a renewable source of energy, without compromising the quality of the wastewater treated.

The project partners outlined in their discussions and presentations the benefits the concepts and technologies of POWERSTEP could offer to municipalities and to Europe’s energy transition.

In terms of activities:

  • Veolia Germany gave a presentation about the project at its stand and distributed the project flyer both in German and English to the stand visitors.
  • Both KWB and Arctik visited the stands of several utilities, operators and public authorities to inform about POWERSTEP.
