Powerstep steady action: Tracer experiment
The efficiency of anaerobic digestion depends strongly on the retention time of the substrate in the digester. If short-circuit flows or dead zones occur the result of anaerobic digestion will be affected. To establish a benchmarking for advanced anaerobic digestion technologies, tracer studies are currently conducted at the wastewater treatment plant Wassmannsdorf in cooperation with the POWERSTEP partner Berliner Wasserbetriebe.
Experimental set up tracer was added as a Dirac impulse to one of the digesters. Samples of the effluent are taken on a daily basis to measure the change in concentration of the tracer substance in the digested sludge. Results will give valuable information about the real mean residence time, short-circuit flows and dead zones in different types of anaerobic digesters.
